When does the transfer portal open? It depends on your sport. Every NCAA Division I sport has its own notification-of-transfer window, and most open right after that sport's season ends. Miss yours and you can wait months for the next one.

The short answer for 2026-27: the Division I football window runs January 4 to 13, 2027 (10 days). Men's basketball runs April 6 to 20, 2027, and women's basketball April 5 to 19, 2027 (15 days each). Fall sports like soccer and volleyball open in late November or early December. Baseball opens June 7, 2027, and softball June 14, 2027. The full table is below.

These dates come from the NCAA's official Division I notification-of-transfer windows table, updated October 8, 2026, after the Division I Cabinet shortened the football and track windows. Rules change often, so confirm your dates with your compliance office before you plan around them.

2. Football transfer portal dates

The 2026-27 football transfer portal window opens January 4, 2027, and closes January 13, 2027. That's 10 days, for both FBS and FCS players, and it is the only football window of the year.

Football used to have two windows, one in December and one in the spring. The NCAA cut that to a single 15-day January window for the 2025-26 cycle (January 2 to 16, 2026). On October 7, 2026, the Division I Cabinet shortened it again to 10 days starting the first business day after January 1. There is no spring football window anymore.

In the 2026 cycle, players whose teams were still in the College Football Playoff on or after January 12 got an extra five-day period after their last game. Ask your compliance office whether a similar postseason exception applies to your team in 2027.

Division II football has its own window: January 2 to 16, adopted in April 2026. More on that below.

3. Basketball transfer portal dates

The men's basketball transfer portal opens April 6, 2027, and closes April 20, 2027. The women's window runs April 5 to 19, 2027. Each is 15 days.

Since January 2026, both basketball windows open the day after that tournament's national championship game. They used to open after the second round of the NCAA tournament and stay open for 30 days. The new format means players on teams still playing in March no longer start the process behind everyone else.

So when does the transfer portal close for basketball? Fifteen days after it opens, which is the third week of April in 2027. That deadline is for entering the portal only. You don't have to pick a new school by then.

4. Volleyball, soccer and other fall sports

Fall sports other than football get a 30-day window that opens after their season, plus a short second window in the spring.

  • Women's volleyball: December 6, 2026 to January 4, 2027.
  • Men's and women's soccer: November 23 to December 22, 2026.
  • Field hockey: November 24 to December 23, 2026.
  • Men's water polo: November 30 to December 29, 2026.
  • Triathlon: November 3 to December 2, 2026.

The second window for these sports runs May 1 to 15, 2027. It helps athletes who decide to move after spring practice or after a coaching or roster change.

5. Hockey, wrestling, swimming and other winter sports

  • Men's ice hockey: April 12 to 26, 2027 (15 days, starting the Monday after the national championship final).
  • Women's ice hockey: March 22 to April 5, 2027 (15 days).
  • Men's wrestling: April 1 to 30, 2027 (30 days, opening April 1 each year).
  • Women's wrestling: February 28 to April 13, 2027 (45 days).
  • Swimming and diving: March 10 to April 23, 2027 for women and March 17 to April 30, 2027 for men.
  • Gymnastics: April 19 to May 3, 2027 for women (15 days) and April 13 to May 27, 2027 for men.

Bowling, equestrian, fencing, rifle and skiing each have a 45-day window that opens in March or April. Many winter windows run 45 days, which gives those athletes more room than football or basketball players get. Check the table above for your exact dates.

6. Baseball, softball and other spring sports

The baseball transfer portal opens June 7, 2027, and closes July 6, 2027. The softball window runs June 14 to 28, 2027.

  • Lacrosse: May 16 to June 14, 2027.
  • Tennis: May 10 to June 8, 2027.
  • Golf: June 3 to 17, 2027.
  • Men's volleyball and women's beach volleyball: May 9 to June 7, 2027.
  • Women's rowing: May 25 to June 23, 2027.

All spring sports also share a second window, December 1 to 15, 2026. If you already know in the fall that you want to move, this is your chance to enter before your spring season starts.

7. Cross country and track and field

Cross country and track and field share two windows. The fall window runs November 23 to December 7, 2026 (15 days, after the cross country championships). The spring window runs June 14 to 23, 2027 (10 days, after the outdoor championships).

The NCAA removed the separate indoor track window in January 2026 and set this two-window format in October 2026. If you compete indoors only, you still use these two windows.

Coaches search your name before they call you back. Hundreds of athletes enter a sport's portal in the same few days. The ones who get calls are easy to evaluate: clear film, current stats and something credible when a coach looks you up online.

8. How long is the transfer portal open?

The transfer portal itself never closes. It's a database that coaches can search all year. What opens and closes is your window to notify your school that you want to transfer.

In Division I, windows last 10, 15, 30 or 45 days depending on the sport. Football has the shortest at 10 days. Basketball, hockey, softball, golf and women's gymnastics get 15. Most fall and spring sports get 30, and many winter Olympic sports get 45.

Once you submit your notification, your school has two business days to put your name in. Our guide on how to enter the transfer portal walks through each step. After that, you stay in the portal until you withdraw, enroll somewhere else or the school removes you.

9. When your head coach leaves

A head coaching change can open a separate 15-day window for that team. Under the rules adopted for basketball and ice hockey in January 2026, the window opens five days after the new head coach is hired or publicly announced. Football used the same structure in the 2026 cycle.

The five-day gap is there so you can meet the new staff before deciding. In basketball, if the school hasn't named a new coach within 30 days, a window can open anyway. The details differ by sport and timing, so get the exact dates from compliance the day the change is announced.

10. What happens after the window closes

The window closing doesn't end your transfer. It only ends your chance to enter for that cycle. Athletes already in the portal can keep talking to coaches, take visits and sign with a new school after the window closes.

If you miss your window, you generally wait until the next one. There are exceptions, such as a head coach leaving, and some athletes get relief through a waiver. Don't count on an exception. Ask compliance before your window closes, not after. Graduate transfers follow the same windows as undergraduates.

For the full process, from the written notification to what happens to your scholarship, read how the transfer portal works.

11. Division II, Division III and NAIA

Every date on this page is a Division I window. The other levels work differently.

  • Division II: football players must start the process during a January 2 to 16 window, under legislation that took effect June 1, 2026. Ask your compliance office whether your sport has a window.
  • Division III: the process and timing are set by Division III rules, not the Division I windows above. Start with your compliance office.
  • NAIA: the NAIA isn't part of the NCAA and doesn't use the NCAA Transfer Portal. Its schools have their own transfer and eligibility rules.

If you're weighing a move between levels, our guide to going from JUCO to D1 covers how eligibility carries over.

12. How to prepare before your window opens

The first days of a window are the busiest. Coaches build their boards fast, so be ready before your name goes in.

  1. Meet with compliance early. Confirm your window, your aid situation and your academic standing a few weeks before it opens.
  2. Update your film. Put your best clips first and keep it short. Our highlight video guide shows how.
  3. Gather your numbers. Current stats, measurables, transcript and remaining eligibility, all in one place.
  4. Make yourself easy to find. Coaches will search your name. A published story on your season gives them context your stat line can't.
  5. Make a target list. Look at rosters that are losing players at your position, at more than one level.

13. Transfer portal timing mistakes

  • Using last year's dates. Football and track changed for 2026-27. Always check the current table.
  • Waiting for the last day. Paperwork takes time and the best roster spots go early.
  • Assuming the window is a signing deadline. It's an entry deadline. You can choose a school later.
  • Entering without a plan. Your current school may not keep your spot or your aid. Talk to compliance first.
  • Building your film after you enter. By then, coaches have moved on to athletes who were ready.

The bottom line

So, when does the transfer portal open? For most athletes, right after their season ends: January 4, 2027 for football, early April for basketball, late fall for soccer and volleyball, and June for baseball and softball. Windows are short, they change most years and missing one can cost you months. Put your date on the calendar, talk to compliance early and have your film and story ready before the window opens.
